Losers have goals…Winners have systems

Yesterday, I ran across an article where Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert) said something fascinating:

“My philosophy is that losers have goals and winners have systems.”

Now, goals have their place, but too many people use lazy, vague goals instead of an approach that works far better.  All too often a business owner comes to me with a goal they want to achieve but no system to actually get there.

Most people have trouble with too many options so a system allows them to focus exclusively on the most immediate item and defer the rest until later.

The very best systems allow us to know exactly where we should be — benchmarking our progress — so we can calibrate whether we need to spend more time/effort or change our approach entirely.

This applies to running your business and marketing. There are infinite numbers of things you “could” do: redesign your blog, start a blog, advertise around town, price your services, use Twitter, on and on and on. But since there’s no clear hierarchy of what you SHOULD do, everything seems equally important…so you assume you need to do it all before seeing results.

What is your marketing system?
